Potassium Iodate
Potassium Iodate is a
stable salt of iodine (shelf life up to 10
years) which may be used to block the uptake of
radioactive iodine (I-131) by the thyroid gland
following a nuclear accident,
detonation of a nuclear weapon or "dirty" bomb.
Cautions:
Potassium Iodate capsules are to be used ONLY in
case of a nuclear emergency. Doses in excess of
the single (one time only) daily dose above
should be taken only upon recommendation by a
physician or public health authority. Before
taking Potassium Iodate (or any thyroid blocker)
consult with your physician if you are taking
quinidine, captopril, or enalopril, are
sensitive to iodine, or suffer from dermititis
herpetiformis, thyrotoxicosis or kidney
problems.
